Interpreter / Transliterator / Transcriber Program
Intermediate District 917 provides Interpreter/Transliterator/ Transcriber visual support services for learners who are deaf or hard of hearing in preschool, K-12 general education, and secondary vocational settings throughout 917-member Dakota County school districts. The Interpreter/Transliterator/ Transcriber serves as an important member of a student’s educational team in their critical role of providing visual access to classroom curriculum, instruction, peer-to-adult and peer-to-peer communication. They work closely with Teachers of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing to provide in-service to school staff and students on their unique role of being an impartial communication liaison in the educational environment and process. They have the important educational role of supporting the language, communication, academic and functional skill development of the learners they serve.  The decision to provide interpreter, transliterator or transcriber services for a learner who is deaf or hard of hearing is done through the IEP process.

District 917 Sign Language Interpreters provide visual access to learners who are deaf or hard of hearing by interpreting spoken communication in school settings into American Sign Language, or transliterating using signs more closely following English word order.  All District 917 Sign Language Interpreters are graduates of accredited sign language interpreter training programs and hold interpreter certification, as required in the MN School Interpreter Law .

District 917 Cued Language Transliterators (CLT) provide visual access to learners who are deaf or hard of hearing by transliterating spoken communication in school settings into cued American English using the system of Cued Speech.  All  District 917 Cued Language Transliterators, except new hires, have completed the previously State-provided LMI CLT training program (currently not provided) and all hold national or MN provisional CLT certification, as required in the MN School Interpreter Law

District 917 Educational Transcribers, also referred to as ‘captionists,’ provide visual access by transcribing and printing notes of classroom instruction and communication using sender/receiver laptops with C-Print software.
