Description:
The TESA program provides special education services for students with disabilities, ages 14-21, who are working on transition skills. TESA students represent a variety of physical and cognitive disabilities, including but not limited to: autism spectrum disorders, traumatic brain injuries, emotional/behavioral disabilities, and cognitive impairments. The TESA program provides individualized instruction and opportunities for each student to achieve his or her maximum level of independence. A wide range of transition courses and activities are offered. TESA provides students with access to the secondary technical education and college courses at Dakota County Secondary Technical Center and Dakota County Technical College campus. On-site work experience, training, and community based experiences provide opportunities not readily available in other settings. Socialization and self advocacy are emphasized throughout the curriculum. Connections are made with adult service providers who will assist qualified students through adulthood.

Special Program opportunities within TESA include:
I. Connections
Connections is an option within the TESA program for student (18-21 years of age) who are working at or near grade level, but need supports and services to prepare them for their transition to careers and/or post secondary training as well as independent living. The Connections classrooms are located near the Career and Technical Skills classrooms, giving students opportunities to interact within the college setting.
II. TESA Works
The TESA Works Storefront provides opportunities for students to develop work skills in a hands-on community retail environment. Located in East Valley Plaza in Apple Valley, students become involved in all aspects of retail sales and business operations. Students learn to develop, produce, display, market and sell products to the public. Students also learn about technology, quality standards, finances, and resources that business and industry must maintain in order to remain competitive in the marketplace.
Support Services:
The TESA program offers support and related services to meet the individual needs of each student. The services are designed to support special education instruction. Related services specialists have expertise in health care, motor development, speech and language, psychology/counseling, behavior management, audiology, and autism spectrum disorders. |
