December 3, 2020

 Dear ISD 917 Families,

I want to express my sincere gratitude for the strong efforts that your child and your family have made to make the best of challenging circumstances.  We know that this is a temporary situation, and we will continue to work closely with you to maximize your child’s success.  Please contact your child’s teacher as you discover the strategies that help them to improve their academic engagement, and of equal importance, let your child’s teacher and care team know of any social/emotional challenges that they are struggling with.  Even in a typical school year, the holiday season can bring many complex emotions.  The COVID-19 pandemic, the associated economic struggles, and the changes in learning models have exacerbated the challenges. Here is the link to our family resources that are posted on our district website:

One of the responsibilities that we have as a school district is to accurately track the COVID-19 positivity rate of our staff and of our students.  For this reason, I ask that you continue to report a positive COVID-19 result even while your child is not coming on campus to learn.  You can contact our school nurses, or site level leadership team to complete an online reporting form.  They will assist you in the process.  The necessity to track this information remains whether we are face-to-face, hybrid, or in a distance learning model.

Help us feature your child’s positive learning experiences while they are at home.  If you have a photo of your child that shows them engaged in a learning activity, we would love to showcase their successes on social media.  For obvious reasons, capturing these encouraging scenes cannot be done through the hundreds of homes throughout our district.  If you have a photo, please send it with a brief caption to linda.berg@isd917.org

We are so lucky to be partnering with such great families. I wish your child and your family joy, health, and peace during the holiday season!

 Sincerely,

 Mark A. Zuzek
